Summerhays was acquired by the Stingrays in a trade with the Norfolk Admirals on Feb. 3, 2017. The netminder played in six contests with Norfolk during the 2016-17 season and earned a record of 2-3-0. During the 2015-16 year, Summerhays started the season with his hometown Alaska Aces, where he posted a 4-7-1 record in 14 appearances. He then moved on to the Missouri Mavericks, where he went 4-3-1 with a 2.05 goals-against average and .921 save percentage.

Summerhays appeared in 106 NCAA games during four seasons with Notre Dame from 2010-14 and helped the Fighting Irish to the CCHA conference championship with a record of 21-12-2 and a career-best 2.01 goal-against average during the 2012-13 season. After finishing his senior season at Notre Dame, he played two games for the Fort Wayne Komets, going 2-0-0 with a 1.92 GAA and a .922 save percentage.

Before college, Summerhays spent two seasons with the Green Bay Gamblers from 2008-10. He was named the USHL’s Goaltender of the Year after the 2009-10 season and helped lead the Gamblers to a Clark Cup Championship.
