Gillies returns to the Stingrays for his 19th pro season. He brings toughness and NHL experience to South Carolina. He served as an alternate captain for the Stingrays during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons and has become a fan-favorite. He has skated in 80 regular season games for South Carolina the last two years, racking up 200 penalty minutes and adding two assists. Never afraid to stand up for his teammates, Gillies has also skated in 24 playoff games for the Stingrays, collecting 44 penalty minutes and one assist.
The veteran has appeared in 57 career NHL games, accumulating 261 penalty minutes. After making his NHL debut with Anaheim during the 2005-2006 season, Gillies spent parts of three years with the New York Islanders from 2009-2012. During the 2010-2011 season, Gillies skated in 39 games for the Islanders, scoring two goals and adding 165 penalty minutes. That season, the 6-foot-3, 231-pound Gillies fought several NHL heavyweights including Shawn Thornton, Jared Boll, Paul Bissonnette and the late Derek Boogaard.
Gillies began his professional hockey career with the Mississippi Sea Wolves in 1999 and has also played for five other ECHL teams prior to joining South Carolina including Greensboro, Augusta, Richmond, Peoria and Orlando.
