Augusta, GA – The South Carolina Stingrays put their 3 game winning streak on the line when they traveled to the James Brown Arena to take on the Augusta Lynx. With Nate Kiser making his return to the line-up after breaking his leg, and Derrick Byfuglien making his first start since being acquired via trade, the Stingrays scored early and often, to defeat the Lynx 4-1.
“I’m really happy with what I saw today,” said Head Coach Jared Bednar. “The defense really seemed rested tonight with Kiser back and Byfuglien in the line-up.”
The Rays got the scoring started early when Marty Guerin got his 4th goal of the season, with the lone assist going to Trent Cambell at 1:18. Matt Reid made it 2-0 on his 7th goal of the season at 13:21. The assists went to Matt Scherer and Steve Pinizzotto.
The second period was dominated by the Stingrays, though not on the scoreboard. The play was constantly in the Lynx zone, and the Rays out shout the Lynx by a 10 to 3 margin.
In the 3rd period the Rays added two more, to give themselves a 4-0 lead. At 10:52 Pinizzotto scored his 6th goal of the season, from Chris Chaput and T.J. McElroy. That was followed by Reid’s second goal of the game, his 8th of the season, at 15:38 from Paul McIlveen. At 18:42 Aaron Slattengren got his league leading 18th goal of the season to make it 4-1, the eventual final.
The winning goaltender was Davis Parley who stopped 16 of the 17 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was J.P. Levasseur who stopped 26 of the 30 shots he faced. The Rays went 0 for 3 on the power play, while killing off 5 of the 5 short handed situations they faced.
“With a full corps of defensemen, I think that we can eliminate a lot of the problems that we faced during our 6 game slide,” said Bednar. “Kiser looked as if he hasn’t missed a beat, and I thought Byfuglien fit in very nicely.”
