Wheeling, WV – Matt W. Reid made his first start of the season for the South Carolina Stingrays after coming back from a snake bite injury. In his first game back he potted two goals, a short hander and a power play goal, to help the Stingrays defeat the Wheeling Nailers 6-2.
The Rays got out to a quick start in the first period when Scott Romfo scored his first goal of the season, a power play goal at 3:13 with assists from Cail MacLean and Chris Chaput. They would double their lead later on in the period on a short handed goal from Reid. Reid took a great drop pass from Stephen Werner and put it behind Wheeling’s net-minder David Brown. Reid’s goal came at 14:21 from Werner and Grant McNeill. Wheeling put one on the board and cut the lead in half with a power play goal late in the period.
Coming in to the second period, the Rays had a 2-1 lead. They scored their first regular strength goal of the game when Travis Morin got one by Brown, his second goal of the season. Morin’s goal came at 12:15 of the second period and the lone assist was MacLean, his second of the game. After another power play goal by the Nailers, cutting the lead to one, the Rays responded with a Pat McNeill goal. McNeill scored his second of the season from Paul McIlveen and Pierre-Luc O’Brien, at 17:30, another power play goal. Matt Reid struck on the power play once again, with only 6 second left to go in the period. Reid got his second goal of the season, not to mention his second goal of the night, when he tipped in a shot from Nate Kiser. Reid’s goal at 19:54 was from both Kiser and O’Brien.
The third period featured the Stingrays protecting their lead, which at this point was 5-2. With one minute left to go in the game, Tommy Maxwell scored his first goal of the season O’Brien and McIlveen, to put the nail in the coffin.
The winning goaltender was Davis Parley who looked strong on the night, and saved 37 of 39 shots he faced. Brown was the losing goalie, saving 29 of 35 shots. The Stingrays went 3 for 10 on the power play, and killed off 6 of 8 penalty kills.
The Rays will be back in action tomorrow evening as they take on the Johnstown Chiefs for the second time in 4 days at the Cambria County War Memorial. Game time will be at 5:05 PM with the Benitos pre-game show starting at 4:50.
