North Charleston, SC – South Carolina Stingrays goaltender and Washington Capitals prospect Philipp Grubauer will step onto the North Charleston Coliseum ice for tomorrow’s contest against the Gwinnett Gladiators with a colorful piece of new equipment, his Capitals/Stingrays themed mask.
“It’s the best mask I’ve ever had,” said Grubauer. “I told the designer that he could do anything he wants and it turned out great.”

The mask features the Capitals eagle logo “flying” through the clouds on one side and the Stingrays logo “swimming” on the other. The only requirement Grubauer made was that his home country, Germany, was represented on the back plate.
“I always want to represent my country,” he said. “The German and Bavarian flag are always on the back along with a cross.”
Grubauer, a fourth-round draft pick (112 overall) by the Capitals in 2008, is 10-3-1 with the Stingrays this season and ranks third in the ECHL with a 1.84 goals-against average and .934 save percentage. The 2011-12 season marks the eighth consecutive season the Stingrays and the Capitals have been affiliated.
