North Charleston, S.C. – The South Carolina Stingrays and Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Spencer Carbery announced today that the team has agreed to terms with forward Justin Maylan anddefenseman Zack Currie. In keeping with club policy, details of the agreements were not disclosed.
Maylan, 22, skated in 49 games with the Stockton Thunder of the ECHL in his rookie campaign last season finishing third on the team with 40 points (18 goals, 22 assists). Before suffering a season-ending injury in early February, the Calgary, Alberta, native was third among ECHL rookies in scoring and power-play points (15) and second among first-year players with 12 power-play assists and 144 shots. On January 23, 2013, Maylan represented the Thunder in the 2013 ECHL All-Star Game in Loveland, Colorado and added one assist in the ECHL All-Stars’ 7-3 victory over the Colorado All-Stars. The Stingrays acquired the ECHL rights to Maylan on June 12 to complete an earlier trade with Stockton.
“I’ve heard nothing but great things about South Carolina and about Carbery as a coach,” said Maylan. “Not only is he great at developing players, but also moving them up to the American Hockey League. It’s the best of both worlds.” Click here to listen to the full interview.
Prior to turning pro, the 6-foot-1, 170-pound forward skated five seasons of junior hockey in the WHL with the Prince Albert Raiders, Prince George Cougars and Moose Jaw Warriors totaling 254 points (87 goals, 167 assists) in 331 games.
Currie, 25, served as team captain in his senior year at Quinnipiac University last season and helped the team reach the NCAA Championship before falling to Yale behind one goal and seven assists for eight points in 42 contests. In four seasons with the Bobcats, the Victoria, British Columbia, product registered 42 points (13 goals, 29 assists) in 144 games. Before joining the NCAA ranks, Currie spent four full seasons of junior hockey in the BCHL with the Cowichan Valley Capitals tallying 118 points (29 goals, 89 assists) in 195 contests.
“I enjoyed talking to Spencer and heard a lot of great things about the program,” Currie said. “That was what made me want to come to South Carolina over other places. Now I’m trying to become comfortable with where I am going to be. I’ve never been that far south.” Listen to the complete interview here.
