Zajac Heads To Hershey

Nov 2, 2017

The Hershey Bears announced Thursday that forward Kelly Zajac will be recalled to the American Hockey League (AHL). The 29-year-old skater has played 131 AHL games in his career including nine in Hershey a year ago where he scored seven points on four goals and three assists.

Zajac has played in all four of South Carolina’s contests to start the 2017-18 campaign and scored goals in back-to-back games last weekend in Norfolk. The forward had three total points on two goals and an assist in the four games. During 2016-17, the Winnipeg, Man. native suited up for 59 regular season games with the Stingrays and was second on the team in scoring with 52 points (13 goals, 39 assists). He then added 17 points (six goals, 11 assists) in 22 playoff outings.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound forward also spent parts of three seasons with the AHL's Albany Devils from 2012-15, including a 44-point campaign during 2013-14 with 12 goals and 32 assists in 67 games. Two seasons ago Zajac skated in 14 games with Manitoba Moose of the AHL, notching one assist.

Before turning pro, Zajac played collegiately at Union College, scoring 128 points (37 goals, 91 assists) in 159 games over four seasons. He helped the Dutchmen to an ECAC regular season championship in 2011-12 while being named to the ECAC’s All-Third Team, and was also named to the conference’s Second Team in 2010-11.

The Stingrays also announced the release of goaltender Carmine Guerriero Wednesday. Guerriero, 25, is in his rookie season. The 6-foot, 175-pound netminder did not appear in any games for South Carolina during the regular season.

South Carolina returns to action on Friday in Greenville against the Swamp Rabbits at 7 p.m. The Stingrays are back at home Sunday to take on the Jacksonville Icemen at 3:05 p.m.
