Stingrays Unveil Capitals-Themed Third Jerseys

Aug 4, 2016

The South Carolina Stingrays have unveiled a special third jersey for the 2016-17 season that pays tribute to the club's National Hockey League (NHL) affiliate, the Washington Capitals. ‚Äč

“Working with the Washington Capitals for over 10 years has been an honor,” said Stingrays President Rob Concannon. “We are proud to be affiliated with such a first-class organization. As our relationship and fan base continues to grow, we thought it would be a great idea to design a jersey that represents the Capitals and the Stingrays. ‘Rocking the Red’ will give our players and fans a great sense of pride as we head into the 2016-17 season. There are many Capitals fans in the Charleston area and it’s a great sight to see all of them at the North Charleston Coliseum cheering on the Stingrays.”

The jersey emulates the design of Capitals' red jerseys while showcasing the Stingrays' primary crest on the front of the jersey. The uniform features the Capitals' alternate logo on each shoulder, and a vibrant red, white, and navy color scheme.

Earlier this year, the Stingrays and Capitals announced an extension to their affiliation agreement through the 2017-18 season. With the affiliation stronger than ever, the Stingrays' new third jersey is designed to showcase the bond between the two clubs. A large number of Capitals fans also call the Lowcountry home, and the new jersey allows these fans to show support for their favorite NHL team while cheering on the hometown Stingrays.

The Stingrays are entering their 11th season as the Capitals' ECHL affiliate (2004-12, 2014-present). Throughout the history of the affiliation, the Stingrays have seen many players advance from the Lowcountry to skate in the NHL with Washington, including Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby, the 2015-16 Vezina Trophy winner, and fellow netminder Philipp Grubauer. Holtby represented the Stingrays at the 2009-10 ECHL All-Star Game and Grubauer was named to the ECHL All-Rookie Team while playing for South Carolina in 2011-12.

The Capitals-inspired third jerseys will be worn for the Stingrays' 24th season in the Lowcountry which starts on October 22. 2016-17 Season Ticket Packages are on sale now featuring discounted pricing and great benefits! For more information, fans may call the Stingrays' offices at 843.744.2248 or visit StingraysHockey.com.
