This is the second consecutive year, and the fifth time in franchise history, South Carolina has advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals. This is the third all-time postseason meeting between South Carolina and Wheeling. The Nailers have won both of the other two match-ups, beating South Carolina in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals, 3-1, in 2011, and sweeping the Stingrays in the 2014 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.
The two teams met twice during the regular season in Wheeling on December 4-5. Wheeling claimed a 3-2 win in the first game, and the Stingrays responded with a 6-1 win the next night. Both teams will experience a quick turnaround after finishing a hard-fought seven game series in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. The Stingrays defeated Adirondack in double-overtime in Game 7, while the Nailers knocked off the Reading Royals in overtime in their own Game 7 on home ice. In the opening round of the postseason, South Carolina defeated Kalamazoo, 4-1, and the Nailers beat Florida, 4-2.
