Stingrays Agree To Terms With Steve WeinsteinJul 27, 2016
The South Carolina Stingrays, proud affiliate of the Washington Capitals, have agreed to terms with defenseman Steve Weinstein, Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Ryan Warsofsky announced today. Weinstein's rights were obtained by the Stingrays on June 3 to complete a previous trade that sent forward Colin Mulvey to Cincinnati.
“We’re happy to have Steve Weinstein join the Stingrays,” said Warsofsky. “He’s another guy on our blue line that can move pucks. He can get up in the rush and be offensive. We identified and targeted him because we thought he could be a real help breaking the puck out, something that will be a focus for us.”
Weinstein, 25, completed his rookie season with Cincinnati last year. He skated in 52 games with the Cyclones, scoring 22 points (three goals, 19 assists). The Los Angeles, California native also appeared in four games for Lake Erie of the American Hockey League (AHL), skating for Stingrays Hall of Famer Jared Bednar. He notched one assist for the Monsters.
"I'm really excited to join the Stingrays," said Weinstein. "When I got the call early in the summer and I found out I was involved in a trade, it was a different experience because I have never been traded. When I heard it was to South Carolina, I was excited. I've had teammates tell me I'll love it, that it's a great organization that always wins, and also that Charleston is a great place to play."
The 5-10, 175-pound defender played four seasons of collegiate hockey at Bentley College, skating in 145 games and registering 105 points (14 goals, 91 assists). He served as an alternate captain during his senior season, and was named the Atlantic Hockey Association's (AHA) Best Defenseman during the 2014-15 campaign. He was a two-time member of the All-Atlantic First Team. Prior to his time in the NCAA, Weinstein helped the Vernon Vipers of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) to three straight championships.
