Stingrays Add Pair of Rookie Defensemen

Jul 29, 2016

The South Carolina Stingrays, proud affiliate of the Washington Capitals, have added a pair of rookie defensemen to the roster. The club has agreed to terms with Evan Moore and Alex Pompeo, Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Ryan Warsofsky announced today.

Moore, 24, just completed a four-year NCAA career at Robert Morris University. The 5-11, 175-pound defenseman appeared in 152 collegiate games, notching 31 points (four goals, 27 assists). Moore served as an alternate captain for the Colonials and helped the club to back-to-back regular season conference titles in 2014-15 and 2015-16. He was a four-time member of the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team. The native of Grosse Point, Michigan signed with the Elmira Jackals on March 23 and appeared in one game last season, making his professional debut on March 26 versus Brampton.

"We are looking for some younger energy and we found that in Evan," said Warsofsky. "He has come highly recommended. He's more of a stay-at-home defenseman. He competes really hard, is smart with the puck, and is a strong skater."

Pompeo, 23, skated two seasons at the University of Southern Maine before moving to Salve Regina University for his final two seasons of collegiate hockey. In total, he posted 75 points (26 goals, 49 assists) in 103 games. He led defensemen in scoring both seasons at Salve Regina, leading the Seahawks to an Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northeast championship. He was also a member of the All-ECAC Northeast First Team both seasons with the Seahawks. The 6-foot, 190-pound defenseman signed with the Columbus Cottonmouths of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) late last season, skating in 10 games, with six points (two goals, four assists).

“Pompeo is another defenseman who I think can help us break pucks out and move up the ice” said Warsofsky. “We’ve heard good things about his skating, and we are excited to get to see him in camp as he gets acclimated to professional hockey.”
