Stingrays Add Defenseman Andrew DeBrincatApr 5, 2018
The South Carolina Stingrays, proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Washington Capitals and AHL’s Hershey Bears, have signed defenseman Andrew DeBrincat to a standard professional contract Thursday.
DeBrincat, 24, recently finished his senior season at American International College in the Atlantic Hockey Association (AHA), where he scored one goal and 13 assists in 37 games. The 5-foot-7, 155-pound defenseman missed only four games over his four years with the Yellow Jackets, finishing with three goals and 48 assists in 146 career NCAA contests.
He signed an amateur tryout contract with the ECHL’s Indy Fuel on Mar. 15 and made his professional debut two days later, suiting up against Toledo. DeBrincat then agreed to terms with the Fayetteville Marksmen in the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) on Mar. 23 and picked up four assists in five games.
Before enrolling at AIC, DeBrincat spent the 2014-15 with the New Jersey Hitmen of the U.S. Premier Hockey League (USPHL), picking up 34 points (4g, 30a) in 47 games. The native of Farmington Hills, Mich. is the older brother of former OHL scoring champion and current Chicago Blackhawks forward Alex DeBrincat.
The Stingrays expect DeBrincat to join the team in time for their next game on Thursday night in Greenville against the Swamp Rabbits at 7 p.m. and wear No. 42. South Carolina hosts Orlando for the team’s final home game and Fan-Tastic Fan-Ale on Saturday night at the North Charleston Coliseum at 7:05 p.m.
