Stingrays Acquire Nicastro In Trade With Orlando

Defenseman To Join South Carolina In Exchange For Future Considerations

Nov 8, 2016

The South Carolina Stingrays, proud affiliate of the Washington Capitals, completed a trade Tuesday to acquire defenseman Max Nicastro from the Orlando Solar Bears in exchange for future considerations.

The 26-year-old had yet to appear for Orlando this season, but played in a combined 64 ECHL games with both the Solar Bears and Rapid City Rush in 2015-16, scoring 19 points (nine goals, 10 assists).

“We’re excited to announce the acquisition of defenseman Max Nicastro today,” said Stingrays head coach Ryan Warsofsky. “I’m familiar with Max, as he played in Orlando the last few years. He also played with my brother at Boston University so I knew him a little bit there as well. I think he’s going to help on our power play and has a really good shot. At this stage of his career, his first priority is winning a championship and that’s’ exactly what we want to do here.”

The Thousand Oaks, Calif. native is in his fifth professional season after playing three collegiate seasons at Boston University from 2009-12. Nicastro was originally selected by the Detroit Red Wings with the 91st overall pick in the 3rd round of the 2008 NHL Draft and will wear jersey No. 20 with the Rays.

After college, the defenseman played in 25 games with the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins during the 2012-13 season. Nicastro spent 2013-14 in the ECHL with the Toledo Walleye and then split his time between Slovakia and Orlando during the 2014-15 year.

South Carolina hits the road this week to take on Orlando in a three-game series beginning Thursday night at 7:00 p.m.

The Stingrays return home to North Charleston next week to open a three-game series with the Colorado Eagles. All three games will be played at home on Nov. 17 and Nov. 19 at 7:05 p.m., and Nov. 20 at 3:05.
