Steven Whitney Signs With South CarolinaAug 28, 2017
The South Carolina Stingrays, proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Washington Capitals and AHL’s Hershey Bears, announced they have agreed to terms with forward Steven Whitney for the 2017-18 season. Before an injury shortened 2016-17 year, Whitney led the Norfolk Admirals in scoring during 2015-16 with 55 points on 23 goals and 32 assists.
"We were familiar with Steven from when he was in Florida and Norfolk,” said Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Ryan Warsofsky. "He is coming off an injury but two years ago he had a really good season for Norfolk and led them in points. “Now he’s 100% healthy and ready to go.
“We’re excited to get him down here and get him in the mix and he’s familiar with both Steve Bergin our assistant coach and myself and we thought he’d be a good fit for us. I think early on it’s going to take some time and I think he’s going to have some rust, but he’s been skating quite a bit. We see him in a top-6 role. We’re going to need some goal scoring and hopefully, as that rust comes off he’s a guy we can look to offensively."
Whitney, 26, has put up 71 points (31 goals, 40 assists) in 91 career ECHL games while playing for Norfolk and the Florida Everblades. The native of Reading, Mass. also suited up for Norfolk during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons when the club was a member of the AHL, scoring 27 points (13 goals, 14 assists) in 73 contests.
“I know it’s a great spot to be and a great organization,” Whitney said. “The Stingrays usually have one of the top teams and it was a good fit for me. I’m just excited to get down there and know that I’m going to be with some great players. It’s going to be a good team and it’s always nice to play with good players.”
Before turning pro, Whitney had a standout career at Boston College from 2009-2013, helping the Eagles to National Championship titles in both 2010 and 2012. He finished with 128 total points in 160 collegiate games on 55 goals and 73 assists along with 203 penalty minutes and a +45 rating. Whitney was also a member of three Hockey East Tournament championship teams (2010, 2011, 2012) and helped win a Hockey East regular season title in 2012. He was named to the NCAA’s All-Tournament team after the championship in 2012 and to the Hockey East’s First Team in 2013. Whitney served as an assistant captain during his senior season in 2012-13.
Although Whitney only appeared in two games for Norfolk last season, he said he has been training hard over the summer and will be fully ready to compete at training camp in the fall.
“This summer was really good,” Whitney said. “I got to train and skate for the majority of it and I’m feeling pretty good about the start of the year. It has been awhile since I’ve played competitively so I’m pretty excited about it.”
The 5-foot-7, 168-pound scorer also previously played with the Omaha Lancers in the United States Hockey League (USHL) and attended Lawrence Academy with Stingrays assistant coach Bergin.
Whitney, who will wear No. 10, becomes the 12th forward signed to the 2017-18 roster, as well as the 19th player under contract for the upcoming season. More player signings are expected to be announced in the coming days and weeks.
The Stingrays open their 25th anniversary season at the North Charleston Coliseum on Oct. 20 against the Greenville Swamp Rabbits at 7:05 p.m.
