Stars Shine For Stingrays In Game 3 ShutoutApr 17, 2017
The South Carolina Stingrays returned home for Game 3 and put on one of their best performances of the season in a 6-0 pounding of the Greenville Swamp Rabbits Monday night at the North Charleston Coliseum pull the first-round series score to 2-1.
Forward Rob Flick led the way with a hat trick performance and nine shots on goal, while goaltender Parker Milner picked up a shutout after holding the Swamp Rabbits off the board in the contest with 25 saves.
South Carolina also saw multi-point nights from Joe Devin (one goal, one assist), Olivier Archambault (one goal, one assist) and Steve Weinstein (two assists).
The Stingrays got out in front for the first time in the series at 11:05 of the first period when Archambault knocked in a rebound in front of the Greenville net to make it 1-0 after an initial shot by Weinstein. Devin recorded the second assist on the play after picking up a rebound on a shot by defenseman Cody Corbett and dishing it to Weinstein at the point.
Flick got his first of the night just over a minute later at 12:19 on a deflection of a rebound after another initial point shot, this time by Wade Epp. Danny Federico picked up his first point of the postseason with the second assist on the play that made it 2-0.
Then at 4:46 of the second period Devin finished off a perfect passing play from the front of the net at to push the lead to 3-0. Weinstein fed the puck to Zajac behind the net, who in turn set it out front for Devin, who fired the puck behind Greenville goaltender Jeff Malcolm. The strike was Devin’s second goal of the postseason and gave him four points in the first three games of the series (two goals, two assists).
Domenic Monardo put home his first goal of the playoffs on the power play unassisted at 11:26 of the second period to extend South Carolina’s lead to 4-0.
Flick then scored in both the first and final minute of the third period, completing the hat trick and sealing the 6-0 win for the Stingrays. His goal at 17 seconds of the third was unassisted and came after winning the faceoff and finishing off a wraparound in front of the net. The final marker came at 19:22 from Corbett and Archambault on a rebound at the side of the net.
Milner, who had one shutout during the regular season, made some excellent saves in the first and second periods to keep Greenville off the board. He continued his strong play for the entirety of the game, holding the strong Swamp Rabbits forwards without a goal.
Malcolm suffered the loss for Greenville, making 38 saves in a game where South Carolina recorded 44 shots on net.
The Stingrays also had an exceptional night on the penalty kill, holding Greenville 0-for-9 in the game. South Carolina converted on one of their four man-advantage opportunities. Both teams recorded 31 penalty minutes in the contest.
