Rookie Baillargeon Signs With StingraysJul 25, 2017
The South Carolina Stingrays, proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Washington Capitals and AHL’s Hershey Bears, have agreed to terms with rookie forward Robbie Baillargeon for the 2017-18 season. The native of Enfield, Conn. recently finished his college career at Arizona State and will make his professional debut with the Stingrays.
“We are excited to add a player like Robbie to our forward group”, said Stingrays Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Ryan Warsofsky. “Doing some research throughout the summer and being familiar with him, he’s a player that can play in all situations. His numbers in college speak for themselves and he’ll be a nice addition to our team.”
During the 2016-17 season with the Sun Devils, Baillargeon played in 28 games and tied for the team lead in scoring with 21 points on nine goals and 12 assists. The 6-foot, 165-pound forward also played three seasons at Boston University, helping lead the Terriers to a Hockey East Championship and an appearance in the NCAA National Championship game in 2015. In three seasons at BU from 2013-16, Baillargeon played 101 games and registered 55 points on 19 goals and 36 assists.
Baillargeon, 23, is also a former fifth round NHL Draft selection of the Ottawa Senators, going 136th overall in 2012.
“All I needed was one conversation with Coach Warsofsky and then it was an easy decision from there,” Baillargeon said. “With the recent success and history of the team and Coach Warsofsky and I having some things in common, we both played at Cushing Academy and I played at BU where his brother played, it just seemed like a good fit.”
Before playing in college, Baillargeon spent two seasons in the United States Hockey League (USHL) from 2011-13 with the Indiana Ice and Omaha Lancers, posting 89 points (32 goals, 57 assists) in 109 total games. He also starred at Cushing Academy for two years from 2009-11 and was named to the NEPSIHA All-Star Team after scoring 64 points (30 goals, 34 assists) in 32 games during the 2010-11 season.
While at Boston University, Baillargeon was roommates with then teammate Nick Roberto, who has also signed with South Carolina as a rookie forward for the 2017-18 season.
“We’re really close and have been good friends for a while now,” Baillargeon said. “It was pretty awesome to see he was going to South Carolina before I even talked to Coach Warsofsky. That was another reason why it was an easy decision. Having a good friend that you’ve played with before that’s going to the same place makes for an easier transition. We’re both coming in with the mentality that we want to win and try to bring a championship back to Charleston.”
Baillargeon is the seventh forward to sign with the Stingrays this summer, joining Roberto, Joe Devin, Patrick Gaul, Johnny McInnis, Trevor Gillies and Patrick Megannety for the 2017-18 season. More player signings are expected to be announced in the coming days and weeks.
South Carolina opens its 25th anniversary season in front of their home fans at the North Charleston Coliseum on Oct. 20 against the Greenville Swamp Rabbits at 7:05 p.m.
