Rays Sign Henderson, McParland Loaned To Binghamton

Apr 4, 2017

The South Carolina Stingrays, proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Washington Capitals and AHL’s Hershey Bears, have announced the signing of defenseman Mathieu Henderson to a standard professional contract Wednesday. In addition, forward Steven McParland has been loaned to the AHL’s Binghamton Senators.

The native of Brantford, Ont. recently finished his second season with the Flint Firebirds in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), playing in 68 regular season games and scoring 54 points (10 goals, 44 assists). Henderson also appeared in five postseason contests, scoring one goal.

This year was the defenseman’s fourth full OHL campaign and he finished his career with a total of 142 points on 31 goals and 111 assists in 264 regular season games. The 21-year-old began with the Plymouth Whalers for two seasons and stayed with the franchise when they were relocated to Flint in 2015.

Henderson, a 6-foot 180-pound blueliner, will join the team in Atlanta and is expected to be in the lineup when the Stingrays battle the Gladiators on Wednesday night.

McParland is third on the Stingrays in scoring this year with 48 points (19 goals, 29 assists) in 59 ECHL games. The rookie recently had a 10-game point streak in which he racked up 13 points on five goals and eight assists from Feb. 27 through Mar. 25.

This is the second time McParland has been loaned to an AHL team this season, as the forward also played in three games with the Chicago Wolves from Feb. 6-21 and had one assist to go along with four penalty minutes and a +2 rating. It was the forward’s first career AHL experience.

The Schreiber, Ont. native was also named to the 2017 ECHL All-Star Classic roster and won the fastest skater competition at the January event in Glens Falls, N.Y. after being named the ECHL’s Rookie of the Month last November.

The Stingrays have three games remaining in the final week of the ECHL’s regular season, starting Wednesday night on the road vs. Atlanta. South Carolina returns home to face the Gladiators on Friday before squaring off with Cincinnati on Saturday. Both remaining home games begin at 7:05 p.m.
