Rays Sign Defenseman Evan FialaMar 21, 2018
The South Carolina Stingrays, proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Washington Capitals, have announced the signing of defenseman Evan Fiala to a standard professional contract Wednesday. Fiala recently finished his fourth season in the Western Hockey League (WHL), suiting up for 71 games while serving as the captain of the Saskatoon Blades and registering a career-high 20 points (seven goals, 13 assists).
Fiala, a native of Clavet, Sask. played in 266 games during his WHL career, first with the Spokane Chiefs from 2014-16 before being dealt to the Blades in December of 2016. The 6-foot-4, 212-pound defender posted 70 points in his junior career on 17 goals and 53 assists, as well as a +21 rating and 500 penalty minutes.
The 20-year-old is expected to join the Stingrays in Orlando and make his professional debut on Wednesday night against the Solar Bears while wearing No. 16. Wednesday’s game begins at 7 p.m. at the Amway Center.
South Carolina is preparing for three games in Orlando this week before returning home on Tuesday to host the Kalamazoo Wings at 7:05 p.m. at the North Charleston Coliseum.
