Rays Announce Roster MovesOct 9, 2017
The South Carolina Stingrays, proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Washington Capitals and AHL’s Hershey Bears, announced several roster moves Monday. Defenseman Tommy Hughes arrived in South Carolina after he was reassigned to the Stingrays from Hershey and has been added to the roster. Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Ryan Warsofsky also announced the release of four players who were in training camp with the team.
Hughes, 25, was signed to an AHL contract by the Bears on Aug. 23 after spending the first four seasons of his professional career with the Hartford Wolf Pack. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound blueliner has appeared in 226 AHL games, registering 30 points (five goals, 25 assists). He skated in 53 games with Hartford in 2016-17, tallying five assists.
The defender was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the New York Rangers in April of 2013. The native of London, Ont. played for his hometown London Knights in the OHL for parts of four seasons before turning pro. He led the club to back-to-back OHL titles in 2011-12 and 2012-13, and accounted for 32 points (three goals, 29 assists) in 169 career junior games.
The Stingrays released four players from the training camp roster. Forward Stephen Hrehoriak and defenseman Jake Flegel were released from their ECHL contracts, while forward Thanvir Bandesha and defenseman Andrew Tessier were released from tryout agreements.
The team’s roster now has 26 total players, including 15 forwards, eight defenders, and three goaltenders.
South Carolina opens its 25th anniversary season at the North Charleston Coliseum on Oct. 20 against Greenville at 7:05 p.m.
