Stingrays Defenseman Returns To AHL's Bears

Oct 18, 2016

The South Carolina Stingrays, proud affiliate of the Washington Capitals, have announced that defenseman Joey Leach has been recalled by the Hershey Bears, the team’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate.

Leach, who is under contract with the Bears, returns to Pennsylvania after going through training camp with the AHL team. The defenseman played in 58 games with the Stingrays during the 2015-16 season and finished with six goals and 11 assists.

Initially a third-round NHL Draft selection of the Calgary Flames, Leach enters his fourth full pro season this year. He spent the majority of 2014-15 with the Fort Wayne Komets, scoring 19 points (two goals, 17 assists) in 52 games. He also appeared in 10 games with the Lake Erie Monsters of the AHL.

The 24-year-old played four years of junior hockey with the Kootenay Ice, where he was an offensive threat from the blue line. In his final two seasons, Leach notched a total of 77 points. He made his professional debut in 2012 with the Oklahoma City Barons of the AHL.

The Stingrays’ 24th season in the Lowcountry starts Saturday, Oct. 22 at the North Charleston Coliseum vs. the Greenville Swamp Rabbits. The team will distribute free 2016-17 schedule magnets to all fans attending the 7:05 p.m. game.

Fans will also park for free in the Coliseum’s lots during opening night. Head Coach Ryan Warsofsky, who was promoted over the summer, will make his debut behind the bench as the seventh bench boss in franchise history.

South Carolina will also host its annual alumni game in support of former player Adam Calder on Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. The event will serve as a lead-in to the team’s season opener at 7:05 p.m. The Stingrays will welcome some new and familiar faces, including Hall of Fame members Trevor Johnson, Matt Scherer, Nate Kiser, Dave Seitz, Brett Marietti and Jason Fitzsimmons, who will all suit up for the annual contest. All players in the game will wear Calder’s No. 25 jersey. The team is asking for a $10 cash donation at the door. Click here for more information on the Stingrays alumni game.
