The Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL) have announced the reassignment of defenseman Joey Leach to the South Carolina Stingrays Friday. The 24-year-old has played in 12 games with the Bears this season, registering three assists, 18 penalty minutes and a +3 rating. Leach is expected to join the Stingrays and be in the lineup when the team takes on Greenville Friday at 7:05 p.m. at the Bon Secours Arena.
The Wadena, Sask. native is in his second season with the Hershey organization after signing with the Bears prior to the 2015-16 season. Last year Leach spent six games with Hershey, but became a fan-favorite while playing in South Carolina. The defenseman suited up for 58 regular season games with the Stingrays and scored 17 points (six goals, 11 assists) with 122 penalty minutes and a +40 rating. He then appeared in 19 postseason contests, scoring five points (two goals, three assists) with 34 penalty minutes.
Previously a third round selection of the Calgary Flames in the 2010 NHL Draft, Leach is now in his fourth full professional season. He spent the majority of 2014-2015 with the Fort Wayne Komets, scoring 19 points (two goals, 17 assists) in 52 games. Leach also played four years of junior hockey in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with the Kootenay Ice where he was an offensive threat from the blue line. In his final two seasons, Leach notched a total of 77 points. The defenseman made his professional debut in 2012 with the Oklahoma City Barons of the AHL.
