Late Zajac Goal Gives Rays Win Over Greenville

Dec 3, 2016

Kelly Zajac’s game-winning goal with 2:07 to play gave the South Carolina Stingrays (9-8-1-0) a 3-1 victory over the Greenville Swamp Rabbits (9-6-2-0) on Saturday night at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.

Forward Rob Flick also had a tally for South Carolina and extended his point-scoring streak to eight games, while Adam Carlson made 20 saves to earn his third victory of the season.

The Swamp Rabbits scored their only goal of the night at 9:18 of the first to open the scoring and take a 1-0 lead on a shot by Angelo Miceli.

But South Carolina responded in the final minute of the opening period to even the game at 1-1 when Flick got his sixth marker of the year. The forward swept home a rebound in front off a shot by Zajac. Defenseman Marcus Perrier earned the second assist on the goal, his third helper of the season.

Neither team was able to break the tie in the second period and the game stayed even all the way until the final minutes.

Zajac struck with a redirection off an initial shot by defenseman Max Nicastro that got past Mackenzie Skapski. The tally was the fourth of the season for the Winnipeg, Man. native, while Nicastro’s helper was his third of the weekend.

Forward Patrick Gaul sealed the win for South Carolina with an empty net goal, his third of the year. Defenseman Joey Leach earned an assist on the final goal of the night.

Skapski made 29 saves in the loss for Greenville. Both teams were scoreless on the man-advantage, as the Stingrays finished 0-for-5 and the Swamp Rabbits were 0-for-4.

The Stingrays will finish up the three-game weekend in Greenville Sunday at 3 p.m. South Carolina returns to the North Charleston Coliseum Dec. 9 when they also battle Greenville at 7:05 p.m.
