Nov 14, 2017

Jacksonville Icemen (2-6-1-0) forwards Emerson Clark and Jimmy Lodge each had three points in a 5-2 defeat of the South Carolina Stingrays (7-2-2-0) in a school day game with a 10:30 a.m. start time at the Veterans Memorial Arena.

The Stingrays got goals from forwards Dylan Margonari and Steven Whitney in the loss, while Taylor Cammarata, Kelly Zajac and Frankie Simonelli each added assists.

South Carolina took the lead early on in the opening minutes of the game when Margonari found the back of the net for his second goal of the season at 1:46 of the first period. The goal was set up by Cammarata, who got on the scoresheet during his opening shift of his first-ever professional game.

The Rays carried their lead to the middle of the first but Jacksonville’s Garet Hunt evened the score 1-1 at 11:37 of the first period.

With just 33 seconds left in the first frame, Lodge tallied his first goal of the year on the power play to give the Icemen a 2-1 lead at the first intermission.

Jacksonville had control of the second period, scoring twice to increase their advantage to 4-1. Tyler Coulter notched his first of the season at 10:20 before Clark scored his first of two in the game at 15:54.

Clark added another at 3:17 of the third period to push the edge to 5-1 in favor of Jacksonville.

South Carolina crept closer on a power play goal by Whitney at 8:47 with assists from Zajac and Simonelli, but the Stingrays couldn’t get anything else past goaltender Jamie Phillips for the remainder of the game.

Phillips earned the victory, Jacksonville’s first at home in franchise history, by making 29 saves. South Carolina goaltender Jeff Jakaitis stopped 22 shots for the Rays in a losing effort.

The Stingrays outshot Jacksonville 31-27 in the contest, while both teams finished 1-for-6 on the man-advantage.
