Hershey Re-Signs Forward Kelly ZajacJul 14, 2017
The Hershey Bears, the American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the South Carolina Stingrays, announced the re-signing of forward Kelly Zajac to a one-year contract for the 2017-18 season on Friday.
Zajac spent most of the last year in South Carolina with the Stingrays, reaching a career-high with 52 points in 59 regular season contests. The forward also played a major role in SC’s run to the Kelly Cup Finals, appearing in all 22 postseason games while scoring 17 points (six goals, 11 assists).
A native of Winnipeg, Man., Zajac was called up to play with the Bears for nine games between Feb. 16 and Mar. 14 and performed well, scoring seven points on four goals and three assists with a +8 rating.
The 29-year-old will begin his sixth professional season this fall. His career has included 131 games in the AHL with the Albany Devils and Manitoba Moose and 95 ECHL contests with the Stingrays and Trenton Titans.
During the 2015-16 season, the forward put up 22 points (nine goals, 13 assists) in 21 regular season games for South Carolina after joining the team in February. He then became a force in the 2016 Kelly Cup Playoffs with 18 points (three goals, 15 assists).
Zajac played his NCAA hockey at Union College, scoring 128 points (37 goals, 91 assists) in 159 games over four seasons. He helped Union to an ECAC regular season championship in 2011-12 and was an ECAC Third Team member that year, and an ECAC Second Team member in 2010-11.
South Carolina opens its 25th anniversary season in front of their home fans at the North Charleston Coliseum on Oct. 20 against the Greenville Swamp Rabbits at 7:05 p.m.
