Hershey Announces Reassignments To Stingrays

Dec 14, 2016

The Stingrays’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate the Hershey Bears announced the reassignment of three skaters to South Carolina Wednesday, including forwards Tim McGauley and Domenic Monardo, along with defenseman Joey Leach.

Monardo and Leach have already had stints with South Carolina this season, while McGauley is expected to play in his first games of the 2016-17 year after missing time with an injury.

McGauley, who is currently in his rookie season, enjoyed an exceptional junior career with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL from 2011-16. In 276 career games with Brandon, McGauley scored 259 points (102 goals, 157 assists) over parts of five seasons. In 2015-16, McGauley served as an alternate captain and led the Wheat Kings to a WHL Championship. During the playoffs, he scored 26 points (eight goals, 18 assists), good for fourth in the league.

The 6-0, 188-pound forward enjoyed his best season with Brandon during the 2014-15 campaign. He appeared in 72 games and led the team in goals (42), assists (63), and points (105). McGauley finished third in the WHL in points and was named the Eastern Conference player of the year. He was also a finalist for the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy, awarded to the WHL player of the year. McGauley signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Capitals on October 5, 2015.

Monardo returns to the Stingrays after suiting up in eight games for Hershey since he was recalled on Nov. 15, posting three assists and a +2 rating. Before getting the call to the AHL, the Oakville, Ont. native had four points (one goal, three assists) along with six penalty minutes in 11 games for South Carolina.

During the 2015-16 season, Monardo suited up in 44 games for the Springfield Falcons in the AHL, scoring 13 points (eight goals, five assists). Before turning pro, the forward played four years at Lake Superior State University from 2009-13. Monardo appeared in 153 games with the Lakers, scoring 101 points (49 goals, 52 assists).

Leach has played in 14 games with the Bears this season, registering three assists, 35 penalty minutes and a +8 rating. The Wadena, Sask. native is in his second season with the Hershey organization after signing with the Bears prior to the 2015-16 season.

Last year Leach became a fan-favorite while playing in South Carolina, suiting up for 58 regular season games with the Stingrays and accounting for 17 points (six goals, 11 assists) with 122 penalty minutes and a +40 rating. Leach was named the AMI Graphics ECHL Plus/Minus award winner for the 2015-16 season. He then appeared in 19 postseason contests, scoring five points (two goals, three assists) with 34 penalty minutes. Now in his fourth professional season, the 24-year-old was previously a third round selection of the Calgary Flames in the 2010 NHL Draft.

McGauley will wear jersey number 18, while Leach and Monardo will go back to No. 7 and No. 40 respectively.

The Stingrays are in Norfolk this week for a three-game series with the Admirals that begins Wednesday night at 7:15 p.m.
