Cannata Recalled, Rejoins Hershey

The Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL) announced Tuesday that goaltender Joe Cannata would be recalled to the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL). The 27-year-old netminder played in three games for the South Carolina Stingrays during the past week, posting a 3-0-0 record with a goals against average of 2.33 and a save percentage at 0.916.

Cannata had previously played in 21 games with the Bears earlier this year, posting a record of 10-5-4.

The Wakefield, Mass. native is in his first season with the Washington organization after signing with the Capitals during free agency prior to the 2016-17 year. Last season Cannata played in 40 AHL games with the Utica Comets during the regular season and posted a career-best 20 wins with a goals against average of 2.52 and a save percentage at .909 to go along with two shutouts. The goaltender has played a total of 109 AHL games in his career with Hershey, Chicago and Utica.

Previously a sixth round selection by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2009 NHL Draft, Cannata is now in his fifth full professional season. He spent the 2014-2015 year between Utica and the Ontario Reign in the ECHL. With the Comets, the goaltender had a 1.99 goals against and a .932 save percentage through five games. While suiting up in 21 contests for the Reign, he earned a goals against of 2.02 and a save percentage at .927. That season Cannata was named the ECHL’s starting goaltender in the All-Star game.

Cannata also played four years at Merrimack College in the Hockey East from 2008-2012. The netminder finished his collegiate career as the school’s record holder in multiple categories including saves (3,152), GAA (2.47) and save percentage (.915). Cannata made his professional debut in 2012 with the Chicago Wolves.

The Stingrays are headed west for six games against teams from the Mountain Division during the next two weeks. The trip begins with a three-game series at Rapid City starting Friday night at 9:05 p.m. EST. The Stingrays return home on Saturday, March 11 to face the Florida Everblades at 7:05 p.m.
