Hat Trick for Reading Program
The South Carolina Stingrays Hat Trick for Reading Program is designed to help stimulate interest in reading among Elementary and Middle School aged children (Grades K-8) in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties. This program is open to Public Schools and Private Schools and the goal is to show children the importance that reading plays in their lives. On behalf of the Stingrays, we hope that children enjoy coming to the games, but we are even more hopeful that they better understand the value of reading.
Each student will be given a Stingrays bookmark and asked to read at least three books during a specified time period (generally four weeks). It will be up to the Teacher, Media Specialist or School Administration at each school to determine the appropriate reading materials. After students read their books, they will be required to submit to the teacher “proof” they read their book (i.e. essay, report, etc.). As books are read, the teacher verifies by initialing a designated space on each bookmark.
After the student completes the bookmark, or scores a ‘Reading Hat Trick’, the student will be able to redeem the bookmark at the Coliseum box office for one complimentary ticket to the Hat Trick for Reading game. Parents will also receive a discounted offer.
Schools who participate in the program will also have the opportunity to win a visit from some of the Stingrays players and/or Cool Ray as well as a cash prize! The top three schools that have the most percentage of student bookmark vouchers redeemed at the box office for the designated Hat Trick for Reading game will receive a donation to the school. To qualify for the prize, the percentage of returned vouchers from each school MUST be over 25 percent!
